There is no limitation on the look of a completed house. For example, the one to the left is finished to look like a conventional plaster home. This satisfies many town councils who will not allow a wooden exterior finish, while providing the homeowner with the space, cost, insulation and strength advantages which have made timber frame the most common method of construction in the United States.

| Unconventional or rustic finishes are also possible. See left for a unique house on stilts, its design taking advantage of the difficult site on which it is situated, and to the right for a solid log home, complete with thatched roof (both under construction). |
